Unhappy Unresolved - No sound on a fresh install on a Dell inspiron 1721 laptop

Hello,
I'm a newby and have switched from Wwindows Vista to Mepis on my Dell inspiron 1721 laptop.

I had been doing some research on the problem and someone suggested upgrading the sound module but I don't know how to do this. I aslo went into console and logged in as su, then opened alsaconf and went through the script but no change. After that my kmixer went from having adjustable controls to a blank box...

According to alsaconf I have an ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia and I'm asuming the module is hda-intel which is in the first column.

Then under that there is a Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips

When I click on the ok it asks to configure the snd-hda-intel?

I have downloaded the latest version on Mepis and appreciate all responces to help.

Sincerely

Kevin

Sound cards with the hda chip have been a problem for Linux, but not unsolvable. There are several posts on the board regarding this.I would suggest doing a search on hda in the forum search function and seeing how others have solved this.

Here is just one thread on the subject for example:

Smile This Fixed it

OK, what I did is

1. Open up /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel in a text editor as root (right click file -> Actions -> Edit as Root).
2. there were two lines...
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=2
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

3. I remove both lines by adding a # before them.
they looked like this
#options snd-hda-intel position_fix=2
#options snd-hda-intel model=auto
4. Rebooted.
5. I had sound!

Thanks for the help!
