Smile Solved - "kde with 3d" in Mepis 7

Mepis 6.5 had the nice option of starting kde or kde with 3d at the login screen. How do I add something like that (starting compiz-fusion if "with 3d" is selected) to Mepis 7? I really miss that feature, because it was so easy to switch between eyecandy desktop and fast desktop for serious work without doing any config-editing or having to click beryl or fusion icons every time I log in. Can anyone help me to get this feature back?

I suppose the configuration files for sessions in 6.5 could be looked at, but darn if i know where they are! In 7.0 I just hit the power button to send my laptop into hibernation, and it wakes back up with whatever window manager running it hibernated with.

Okay, where are these session config files? Does anyone know? Hibernation doesn't help me.

Is it possible to switch from KDE, (does it really need 512MD RAM?!), to something like X, Fluxbox, etc and back again, perhaps by way of Compiz-Fusion along the way?

In 6.5, the xsessions config files are stored in /usr/share/xsessions.

They are .desktop files (a special version of a text file)

The standard KDE xsession: (The odd characters are foreign language characters, the important bits are near the top of the file.)

The Beryl plus Emerald plus KDE:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=KDE with 3D
Comment=KDE with Beryl 3D and Emerald Themes
Comment[pt_BR]=Inicia o Beryl com o KDE
Exec=/usr/bin/mstartemeraldkde

Type=Application

Oh, there's a /usr/bin/mstartemeraldkde script--what's in there?

#!/bin/bash

# Define o Beryl como o gerenciador de janela
export KDEWM="/usr/bin/mloademerald";

# Iniciando o KDE
startkde;

# kill orphaned processes
/usr/bin/skill KILL beryl-manager & 2>&1;

AND /usr/bin/mloademerald:

#!/bin/sh
# Script: berylload
# Feito por: Walter Filho (xmagnum@hotmail.com)
# Descrição: Carrega o Beryl e o Emerald (decorador de janela)
# Modified by warren@mepis.org

# Copia as configurações default do Beryl e do Emerald se for necessário
if ! test -d $HOME/.beryl; then
cp -Rf /usr/share/mepis-beryl/beryl $HOME/.beryl;
ln -s $HOME/.beryl/settings1.Profile $HOME/.beryl/settings
fi
if ! test -d $HOME/.emerald; then
cp -Rf /usr/share/mepis-beryl/emerald $HOME/.emerald;
fi

# Zera os logs
echo -n "" > $HOME/.beryl/log;
echo -n "" > $HOME/.emerald/log;

# Inicia o Beryl e o Emerald
beryl --replace dbus settings >> $HOME/.beryl/log 2>> $HOME/.beryl/log &
emerald --replace >> $HOME/.emerald/log 2>> $HOME/.emerald/log &

Those files would most likely work with Beryl in 7.0, or with Compiz-fusion after some editing.

OK, this is how I got the kde with 3D session at login by booting into the simply mepis 6.5 cd, and mounting the home partition of my mepis 7.0 hard drive. On the live cd, open kmenu>system>file system>file system super user mode. At the prompt, type root for the password. click on the up arrow at top left. Go to /usr/share/xsessions. you should see 2 .desktop files in here, one for kde, and one for emeraldkde. On the mounted home partition running mepis 7.0, make a folder called Beryl+KDE (or whtever yo want to call it) Then copy the emeraldkde.desktop file into this folder. Now, on the live cd, go to /usr/bin. There are two more files you are going to copy into the folder you made previously. The first one is mloademerald, and the second one is mstartemerald. Copy both of these files into the folder that you made. I just drug them over and clicked copy.Note where you got these 3 files. Write It Down! Once you have the 3 files coppied over, go ahead and boot back into your mepis 7.0 installation. Open the folder you made before and make sure your files are there.Leave this window open , and go to file system super user mode again, click the up arrow at top left, and go to /usr/share/xsessions. Copy the the emeraldkde.desktop file you coppied earlier into the /usr/share/xsessins folder. You should now have 2 .desktop files. Now go to /usr/bin and copy mloadkde and mstartkde here. thats it. just CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, when you see your login screen, go down to sessins and you should see KDE wth 3D. Click on that , and login. This does not open beryl manager into the panel, so configuration and window themes will have to be opened manually from kmenu>system. One funny thing I did find when I opened /usr/share/xsessins in the 6.5 live cd, was the emeralkde.desktop file was spelled memeralkde, so I just changed it I hope this is helpful. I've never written a howto , so feedback is welcome.

I am editing this in case anyone has an error when logging into KDE with 3D. I was walking a friend through the process, and when he went to login, he got an error that xssessions coukd not find mstartemeraldkde. Make sure that the executable box is checked in the permissions for mstartemeraldkde and mloademeraldkde. To do this, go to /usr/bin, right-click on each of these files, go to properties, andthen the permissions tab at the top. Owner: can read and write Group: can read others: can read, is executable is checked. I dont know why this this happened to him, but I did e-mail the files to him because he didnt have a 6.5 cd, so maybe the permissions are setup different on his machine.
