Default Logitech Quickcam IM

The spca5xx module for this cam in Mepis 6 Final is wrong. To fix this go to here: http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html select Debian, at the deb site download module-assistant and spca5xx source. Architecture All for both.

You will also require kernel headers and linux restricted modules installed, for your specific kernel. These can be obtained via synaptic or apt-get.

You may also need to install build-essential and gcc-3.4 check if you have these with either synaptic or apt-get. (my apologies to anyone who has had problems because of this oversight.)

Install module-assistant prior to installing spca5xx-source. SPCA5xx-source will be installed to /usr/src as spca5xx-source.tar.bz2. Open Filemanager Superuser and navigate to /usr/src open spca5xx package,(left click) then open modules and copy the spca5xx folder to your /home/'username' directory. Close Filemanager Superuser open your /home/'username' directory navigate to the spca5xx folder(directory) and open. Then using the icon at the top of Konqueror(filemanager), open console, this opens console in the current directory.

At the prompt in console: make clean
make
su
make install

If all went well modprobe spca5xx (camlight should come on if all is correct)
you can ensure module is loaded after modprobe by doing lsmod and looking for videodev and spca5xx

You may also check if spca5xx is right for your cam by doing an lsusb in console and noting:

ID 046d:08a6 or something similar then check it here: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Good Luck
:)

Well done armacot. :) After reading armacot's last post I checked the site and sure enough I had failed to read correctly, shame on me! However i downloaded for kernel up from 2.6.11 : gspcav1-20060925.tar.gz, as iam running 2.617.13. Although I had no apparrent issues with the spca5xx in this kernel, I did a modprobe -r spca5xx and installed the gspcav1 driver. Again my cam worked fine, I would however use the gspca1 driver for kernels above 2.6.11 unless it failed to work or caused other issues.

Thank you armacot. :D

Dear friends, my name is Armando, I'm from Naples (Italy) and I'm a Linux newcomer.
I've got a Logitech QuickCam (0x46d:0x92f) that doesn't seem to work in Mepis; I followed the directions given in this thread but it still doesn't work.
Have you got any suggestion?
Thank you in advance :-)

Well I see that the webcam is seen at device #005.Did you install module-assistant from synaptic prior to trying the debian spca5xx driver?Maybe the ubuntu driver would work better for 6.0 instead of the debian one.

I have checked the compatability chart for your cam and it is listed.

The spca5xx module is not loaded according to your lsmod, so try
modprobe spca5xx you will need to do this as root.
