Anyone have suggestions for upgrading from OOo (ubuntu 2.0) to OOo (official2.1)?
Thanks, Lance

Lance -
Just did so. Was having trouble with bugs in 2.0. Went to OOo site and downloaded 2.1, which is a tar/RPM. Used Alien to convert and install the .deb files. I basically followed the instructions at: http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/oo2install.shtml Note: I had to remove OOo 2.0 before successfully doing the final step, which is running a .deb file in a directory inside the RPMS directory named 'desktop-integration'. Seems to be working.... |

Thearne3,
Thanks for the upgrade info, but what I really really need to know is ... whether in your opinion OOo 2.1 is significantly faster than 2.0?! Now, if the answer was a clear "yes", that would make me upgrade in a flash. :cloudnine: |

I don't think you will see a noticeable speed difference (I have not heard there is supposed to be one). Mostly there are some bug fixes, including getting digital signatures to work in Debian style file systems (like MEPIS/Ububtu etc.).

Thearne3,
What, exactly, did you remove regarding OOo? How did you remove OOo? I would like to upgrade, but it didn't work for me when I was using SM 6.0; OOo wouldn't remove, no matter what I did. Thanks for the information. Pastor Ron

I too had trouble removing OOo. Here's what worked:
Close Synaptic (that didn't work) Open a root console (#) Code:
apt-get remove openoffice.org* Code:
apt-get remove openoffice.org* As for the install: 1) download the tar.gz from OOo 2) Right-click > Extract here 3) open root terminal 4) go to RPMS subdirectory 5) Code:
alien --scripts *.rpm 7) Code:
dpkg -i *.deb Code:
cd desktop-integration Code:
dpkg -i *.deb |

Well, my experience wasn't exactly smooth, but it does work, after all.
The menus didn't appear, even after doing the "update-menus" as root. No big deal, though, as the menu editor is a handy tool. One more thing, and this was rather disturbing until the light came on in my gray-haired head . I couldn't get OOo and MySQL to play together until I added a different "Class Path" than the one I had been using. The new one is "/usr/share/java/mysql.jar". After setting that up, we were back in business just like before.I was pleased this time OOo got removed without any hassle. The upgrade went pretty smoothly, considering my complete failure in SM 6.0. This is a happy camper. Thanks, Lance. Pastor Ron |

Hmmm, menu setting worked here.....strange!
Maybe that's because I have no idea what "class_path" is! Oh well, Glad you got it working! |

@ Lance: Just so you know - class path has something to do with getting MySQL and OOo to work together. I have several MySQL databases that are used in OOo, which is the front-end. You have to manually point OOo in the right direction so it and MySQL can communicate with each other.
The menu thing not working is puzzling, but all is well. Pastor Ron |
