Default Install 6.5 : upgrade from 3.x / 6.x series

alright, here we go... This first portion of this guide walks through removing the .kde folder in the home directory which generally causes the most problems when upgrading from 3.x.

The second portion walks through installing Mepis Linux 6.5 while retaining the /home partition.

Hello Saist,

Fantastic guide! Thank you!

Question: For someone like myself that is upgrading from 6.5Beta7 to 6.5 Final, should I remove the .kde folder or leave it as is?

Best regards,

Obe1

should be safe to leave as is

I just saw... I dunno, maybe 1 problem from somebody who was upgrading from 6.0 to one of the 6.04 betas where there was a conflict in the KDE settings.

Default /home on same partition

I have no idea why I didn't create a seperate partition for my /home directory but I seem to have everything in the same partition.

I have another drive that I can backup the /home directory to but how do I maintain all permissions and ownership of files?

Thanks for the guide though, if I had partitioned properly I'd be running 6.5 by now.

okay... I'll screen cap the steps to do that after I get another ... not so little... project finished.

Basically, go ahead and load the live cd. Open up your "install" drive and your "backup drive"

Copy the /home folder onto the back up drive.

Then use Gparted or Qtparted to format the "install" drive with your 3 partitions. One for /root, one for /swap, and one for /home.

After you finish partitioning the drive, Copy your /home folder from the backup drive to the /home partition on the /install drive.

Run through the Mepis Install, make sure you choose to PRESERVE HOME PARTITION, use the same username you had before, and everything "should" be set.

Alternatively, you could also install Mepis twice.

Backup your existing /home folder, and do the automatic install for Mepis.

Then, after the install is complete, copy the backup /home into the new /home.

Reinstall Mepis Again, preserve home, and that should do it too.

Default Thanks a bunch

I was about to reply to myself with a "want to maintain permissions? Try reading a man page you dolt!" Before I could do that though I get a very helpful reply with an offer to capture the whole thing in screen caps.

Good on the Mepis Community!

Thanks Saist!
