Couple a questions...
1. How much work is it to remaster it? I wanna put some kind of disk-imaging tools on it if possible 2. Is there a way I can manually install Mepis or just install the essentials (no big programs like Open Office or Amarok...) on the boot stick so they function like a normal install to an hdd? 3. I read that it works to install Mepis on a removeable usb HDD (vbulletin won't let me post the link yet due to my small amt of posts) but not flash media from what it looks like. Is this a recent change as from reading other posts in the forum it seems it was possible in earlier versions. 4. With Mepis 6.5 I can install the live-cd version by going to the Mepis user assistant. In Mepis installer I can't even see sda to install Mepis to. Was this a recent update so that you would be required to use the system assistant to create bootable usb flash devices? Thanks for your help! Sorry that was alot of questions... :) Scott Last edited by skotjs : 06-19-2007 at 03:46 PM. |

I'm not aware of any version that would install to a USB memory stick. You can only make an image of the LiveCD.
#1 check out the wiki for how much work is involved. #2 You may be able to place programs on the onthego stick and run them. #3 not aware of it ever being possible #4 it was never an option to install to a USB memory stick except in the Assistant as an image.

Isn't this what on the go is about? So you can retain your settings from computer to computer? I guess not after looking further into it.
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Remastering I don't see why you couldn't do this. Remaster Mepis and take out certain large unneeded programs and adding others in to come up with a bootable cd/dvd and then use the cd or dvd to install to what would probably be sda1 and sda2 and then use that. Mepis looks for hardware changes and it might automatically pickup on it as long as the computer has the capability to boot from a flash drive Last edited by ronnielsen1 : 06-19-2007 at 08:35 PM. |

Im agine the possibilities BYOOS or bring your own os. Think about it you go to your local coffee shop and plug in your usb disk booting on to a terminal type system with no hard disk. Plug it into your pda or cel phone boom your checking mail your way. Atm machines who needs a debit card all of your info is plugged in. Security risks yes.But as a community we work on thiskind of 2010ish maybe. Progressive thinking definately. Why be tied down to a big bulky machineim rambling now sorry rambling.

This sort of from-the-ground up approach might be better suited to something like debian etch. Nothing against MEPIS, but it's definitely designed around a specific application (installing to a desktop).
I'd try downloading a netinstall disc of etch and see what you can do with that. |
