Default Fix for Intel-hda-sound in Acer 3680 laptop

First of all, sound works out of the box on this box--good for such a problematic chip. However, plugging in headphones does not mute the external speakers; trouble when trying to listen to something without disturbing others.

The fix is to first turn down the volume to 0 in everything in Kmix mixer, then edit as root the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file. Add this line to the end, then save and reboot.

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch

After reboot, open the mixer--you should have many more sliders! Headphones will be controlled by "Front", and the internal speakers by "Surround". Credit for this fix goes to the Ubuntu forums...

I think an 'Intel HD sound chip tips and tricks' page should be added to the wiki - I think it will become a very full page!

Well, the update to Alsa 1.0.15 fixed this problem anyway.

Just got around to trying headphones on my Acer 7520. I have the headphone problem. Despite the latest alsa, (from etch repos), and applying the line to alsa base from the first post, I cannot get it to work, that is, turn off internal speakers and play through the earbuds.

Any other ideas?

I have built an ALSA 1.017 module set and posted it somewhere here.....try commenting out everything in those files about snd-hda-intel and see if it can figure things out on its own...

Clarification: Do you mean in the alsa-base file, after installing ALSA 1.017?

I would try commenting out any reference to the snd-hda-intel driver in the alsa-base file, plus comment out both lines in the snd-hda-intel file. See if the dirvers can figure things out automatically first, then if not, some hacking may be necessary.

hi Guys,

Been looking at lots of sites today regarding laptops and all of them seem to point out that laptops have more problems and more stuff can go wrong with them!

I've always been a desktop computer man and just wondering if its true that laptops do have more problems as due to a space issue in my room i'm thinking of switching to a laptop.

thanks in advance.

Please start a new thread on your topic, which has nothing to do with the one here. And tell us which version of MEPIS you are using and what you want to do with it.

Thanks.
