Default bcm4306: one big step backward

In PreBeta, all I had to do was to disable Ndiswrapper, fill in the SSID, and restart the interface--worked on both LiveCD and install.

In Beta1, none of that worked with either LiveCD or install. Finally selected to use static IP on Interface tab, instantly connected.

Also: wifi-radar did not work after I installed it. But wicd continues to rock: best wireless app I have seen so far on MEPIS. Wish Warren would consider it for 7.0 (sent him that helpful suggestion...).

Otherwise: lots of good to talk about with this beta!

on my first attempt at installing mepis 7.0 beta1 32 I had a nightmare installing nvidia new drivers from mepis x windows assistant, everthing appeared to go ok until reboot ended up with the following message at boot up after grub, when selecting newest kernel.

kernel Panic:- not syncing:
vfs:unable to mount root fs on unknown- block (0,0)

it would let me boot from MEPIS at sda1, kernel 2.6.22-1-mepis-smp but would not start the x server,i tried reconfiguring xorg to nv but it would just hang with a black screen.

i dont know whether this had anything to do with the repositories not synced at that time or not as i had downloaded a few minutes after the beta had been put up on the subscribers site?.

I decided to completley reinstall again from scratch to the hard drive,i had no issues with the general installation and the monitor issue seems to be fixed when rebooting as in the out of sync issue,(this was fine on my first install as well)i reinstalled nvidia new drivers and they installed correctly and machine rebooted without kernel panic this time, for some reason there is no nvidia logo displayed just before you sign in this was displayed in the pre-beta?

there are still two kernel error messages displayed as well which are:-

Assembling md arrays:- failed (no arrays found in config file or automatically)

Mount: According to mtab, sysfs is already mounted on /sys failed

these dont seem to effect the running of the system and i was getting these also on pre-beta as i believe most other people were as well.

All in all the system seems a bit snappier now as well, and now i have finally got everthing up and running iam very pleased so far.

And the Amarok icon is still the kmix lookalike blue one,and not the wolf if anyone is interested :-)

regards

todders

Default Probably the Mepis repo server was overloaded........

I found out that the Mepis 7.0 repo couldn't be reached for a while. (Maximum number of connections reached).
Probably that's why your nvida-glx installation went sour (source package from the server couldn't be pulled in...).

I have been testing the livecd and in particular the aufs.

Good news is that you can now add/remove apps while using the livecd. I installed abiword, fluxbox, rox-filer, removed all of kde and it worked.

Bad news is that you cannot save the changes unlike in other distros with this feature (yet)

Small point, butI think Warren should include a light wm with the livecd ie fluxbox or icewm. Both are less that 1MB and they really do make a difference on the livecd especially for those with less than 512MB

just wondering, but since the kernel is 2.6.22-3 kernel, does that mean its running the new scheduler, or has warren stuck with the old one? I'm dieing to try out the CFS. Either way, I'm really pumped for a new mepis release.

Default SM 6.9.60beta1_64 is Working

Well, now. SM 6.9.60beta1_64 is . Wireless is working, and so is sound. OOo works. Streaming audio is working. I'm pretty happy. The 32 bit version will be my next try, but this one might just get installed on a spare partition on my laptop, which is what I'm typing on now.

Wireless didn't work out of the box like SM 6.5.02, but it was still pretty easy to set up with KNetworkManager. My forgetter just kicked in to overdrive (working outside in the FL sun and here, too), but did I miss the opt-in NVIDIA driver parameter at grub?

Ko, would a hardware listing be helpful?

Am trying the 32-bit Beta1 right now as a Live CD. Had an initial problem with having no desktop icons (including an install icon), but that problem was resolved by choosing the VESA option on boot-up. Am now ready to create a spare partition to try a hard disk installation, but have a question: Is it okay to re-use my exising /home partition that I use for MEPIS 6.5.02 32-bit?

Joany,

Conventional wisdom dictates you not reuse your /home partition as many of your user config files will be conflicted. That's my understanding, anyway. I'm just going to make a very small /home and use my 6.5 /home as a data drive. Just my 2 pennies.
